About the Authors

E. Thomas Garman is an author, researcher and advisor based in Orlando, Florida, and Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech University. He has worked for United States Senator in Washington as well as in sales management, economic development in West Africa, and for a non-profit credit counseling organization. He is an elected Distinguished Fellow in both the American Council on Consumer Interests and the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. Garman has served on consumer advisory boards for the American National Standards Institute, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, National Advertising Review Board, National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Kraft, Conoco, and Sears & Roebuck. His consulting includes Manulife Financial, Profit Sharing/401k Council of America, AT&T, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Department of Defense. His work has been featured in hundreds of publications, including USA Today, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, U.S. News & World Report, and he appeared on National Public Radio and NBC Nightly News.

JING JIAN XIAO is a professor of consumer economics at the University of Rhode Island, teaching courses of personal finance, consumer protection, and family and consumer research. Prior to the current position, he taught marketing and business forecasting at Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics. He received his bachelor's and master's degree in economics from Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics, in China, and his doctorate in consumer economics from Oregon State University. His dissertation study on the family financial portfolios behavior won the 1992 Dissertation Award of American Council on Consumer Interests. His research interests include saving and investing behavior, retirement planning, and family businesses, which have been supported by the U. S. Department of Labor, U. S. Department of Agriculture, U. S. Chamber of Commerce, University of Rhode Island Research Council, and the Standards Board of Certified Financial Planners. He a Research Fellow of the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
Xiao has authored or co-authored numerous refereed journal articles. He has presented research findings at national and international professional conferences in the U.S., Malaysia, China, and Korea. In addition, he is the author of Modern Family Economics (Shanghai, 1993), co-editor of The Mathematics of Personal Financial Planning: Using Calculators and Computers (Dame, 1999), and co-author of or contributor to eight other books, including Personal Finance (Houghton Mifflin, 1997), Encyclopedia of Consumer Movement (ABC-CLIO, 1997), Regulation and Consumer Protection (Dame, 1998), Consumer Economic Issues in America (Dame, 1997), Social Transition in China (1998), Macro Marketing (Commerce, 1990), Introduction to Marketing (Shaanxi, 1988), and Business Forecasting (Agriculture, 1987).

BRUCE H. BRUNSON, CDR (USN) retired, is the Dean of Workforce Development and Liberal Arts at Florida Community College Jacksonville. His previous position was an assistant professor in family financial management, Department of Near Environments, Virginia Tech. He instructed in both undergraduate and graduate courses in family financial management and consumer economics. He received his Ph.D. in consumer economics and environmental design with an emphasis in family financial planning from Texas Tech University in 1996. He also has a M.A. in Computer and Information Technology and a MBA both from Webster University, and a B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy in operations analysis. Prior to going to Virginia Tech, he taught at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University teaching courses in management information systems and strategic management. He retired in 1995 from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. His special interests include family economic well being throughout the life cycle, employee benefits education, family financial management, retirement planning, and military issues in financial planning and retirement planning.
Brunson has co-authored several refereed journal articles. He has presented research findings at the national conferences several of organizations including the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education and the Academy of Financial Services.
