Reviews

Ma Xiaojun develops from a schoolboy who runs with a pack of peers into one who, in a new school, realizes that there may be more to life than just fisticuffs and bravado—and that “more” is the opposite sex. Set during China’s Cultural Revolution, the story arc here mimics memories: loosely linked vignettes through which the reader circles ever closer to familiarity with the protagonist. Interesting panel flows and sizes, and expressive close-ups further echo the sense of reminiscence. Ma Xiaojun’s authenticity is compelling. Grades 10-12. --Francisca Goldsmith
