From the Author
A few astute readers have inquired about Mary's "nee". Originally this tale was to take place in a more modern NYC and was to be solved by a detective other than Holmes. However in writing the book I found that the detective was (inevitably I suppose) acting more and more like Holmes and so I decided to place the mystery into the 1890's and "bury" the original mystery solver and use Holmes himself. The original character was a rich man named J. P. Marsden (with J.P Morgan in mind) and his "Watson" like character was his butler and driver and loyal friend who will not be named here. I liked the Marsden character very much and so I gave him a fitting "memorial tombstone", i.e., Mary's "nee".

Carraher's reconstruction of "The Lost Reminiscence of John H. Watson, M.D." is wonderfully authentic...In 1890s New York, a "dead rabbit" is a "best formidable opponent." Holmes's case starts after a young pregnant woman's suicide from the Brooklyn Bridge...Everything happens swiftly in this slim novel. Deaths, murders, attacks quickly add up...Though (the novel) takes many twists and turns before Holmes solves the puzzle, morality and justice prevail in this appealing recreation of the Doyle genre.
