Chevrolet and GMC trucks might be called the universal trucks. They are so buildup friendly that the legions of owners have chosen the friendly Chevy or burly Jimmy as the basis for a modified unit. The only problem is that so many options exist that they can become a blur.
In the Chevy and GMC Truck Performance Handbook, author Jim Allen makes picking the right road for a GM truck buildup just a little bit easier. Covering two and four-wheel drive trucks from 1967 to 1996, the book will give you tips on building a trail busting 4x4, a Baja conquering prerunner, a blindingly fast sport truck or a hard working hauler.
The book covers the GM truck from bumper to bumper, spending extra time in areas where the author's experience as a writer for a variety of truck magazines has shown that owners have the most trouble. If you want to build a top-notch GM truck of any sort, the Chevy and GMC Truck Performance Handbook can help you do it without draining your brain or your wallet.

Much of my basis of knowledge on the GM truck came from the two I have owned and wrenched upon. The one I still drive was acquired in 1995 as a project vehicle for Four Wheeler magazine. "Project Blazer" ran over several years and the buildup progressed from mild to wild, illustrating the performance gains as they were found, but also showing the pitfalls or wasted steps. That poor old Blazer has been apart so many times that it’s able to disassemble itself on command these days, but combined with my wrenching background and answering tech questions for a number of magazines, it showed me where most people need help. I combined this real-world information with sound basic principles and the expert advice of a good many pros to make a book for Chevy gearheads. By a Chevy gearhead! Nothing makes me happier than to see a copy of this book with greasy fingerprints and dog-eared pages!
After serving three years as an engineer on a U.S. Army ship during the Vietnam Era, Jim spent 20 years as a professional auto technician, working on Land Rovers, Porsches, Audis, Lincolns, and VWs, among others. For about half that time, he was a frequent contributor to automotive and truck magazines as time permitted. In 1992, he jumped into the writing game full-time, with a sideline seasonal job with Land Rover North America as an off-highway driving instructor. Jim currently has well over 1,000 published magazine articles spread out in the American, German, English and Japanese markets. He also has six published non-fiction books on four-wheel drive topics and is under contract for another. The history and development of four-wheel drive is one of his primary automotive interests.
