Synopsis

"Meet the Mets, meet the Mets, step right up and greet the Mets."New York Mets: The Complete Illustrated History brings to life a half century of Mets baseball, from the lovable losers of the early years, through the championship teams of 1969 and 1986, up through the stars of today. Chock full of photos, memorabilia, and memories, New York Mets tells the complete story of the franchise, including season-by-season recaps, profiles of the great players and characters, and behind-the-scenes stories through the decades. Longtime Mets fan, author, and expert Matthew Silverman selects the Top 50 Mets players of all time, including current and future Hall of Famers Tom Seaver, Gary Carter, and Mike Piazza; superstar hurlers Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack, Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, and Johan Santana; powerful sluggers like Dave Kingman, Darryl Strawberry, and Carlos Beltran; slick-fielding glove-men Bud Harrelson, Keith Hernandez, and Jose Reyes; and fan favorites Ed Kranepool, Tug McGraw, Rusty Staub, Mookie Wilson, David Wright, and many more. A thorough appendix of team records, stats, and accomplishments rounds out this authoritative celebration of a beloved team. This book is guaranteed to give you the time of your life. http://metspolice.com/2011/03/15/interview-with-the-author-of-mets-complete-illustrated-history/

From the Back Cover

The New York Mets began in 1962 as one of the worst teams professional baseball had ever seen, yet they quickly captured the hearts and minds of millions of fans eager to cheer on this band of misfits led by the incomparable Casey Stengel. By the end of the decade, the team was shocking the world with its miracle run to a World Series championship, led by young heroes like Tom Seaver, Cleon Jones, Bud Harrelson, and others. From there, save one more improbable pennant in 1973—“Ya gotta believe!”—the Mets took their fans on a wild ride of a few highs, a lot of lows, and plenty of memorable moments. From Dave Kingman’s towering home runs and Nino Espinosa’s towering afro to Rusty Staub’s pinch-hits and Lee Mazzilli’s tight pants, the 1970s was an interesting time to be a Mets fan, indeed. The outlook changed dramatically in the next decade, when homegrown talents like Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry combined with veteran stars Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and others to produce a team that was dominant on the field—and turbulent off of it. The historic finishes to the 1986 League Championship Series and World Series were occasions to be savored by the Mets faithful for years to come. The team’s second quarter century did not bring any more championships, but fans continued to support their beloved Mets in record numbers, from Shea Stadium to Citi Field. This fully illustrated celebration of Mets baseball takes you season by season from the earliest days of the franchise to today. Profiles of the team’s top 50 all-time players provide in-depth looks at the best of the best in orange and blue: Seaver and Koosman, Darryl and Dwight, and stars of today David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Johan Santana. Complete with stats, stories, photos, and memorabilia, New York Mets: The Complete Illustrated History is an entertaining and authoritative tribute to a half century of amazin’ accomplishments and miracle moments.
