Foreword by Barry Goldwater. John Jacob Rhodes Jr. (September 18, 1916 August 24, 2003) was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Republican Party, Rhodes served as a U.S. Representative from Arizona for thirty years from 1953 to 1983. He was the minority leader in the House of Representatives from 1973 to 1981 and had conservative agenda. He was the first Republican ever elected to represent Arizona in the House. He was a member of the Arizona delegation to several Republican National Conventions, Barry Goldwater's representative on the Platform Committee in 1964, chairman of the Platform Committee in 1972, and Permanent Chair of the Convention in 1976 & 80. "I Was There" is a political autobiography by John Jacob Rhodes, a long-serving U.S. Representative and House Minority Leader from Arizona, published in 1995 with Dean Smith as co-author, detailing his experiences in American politics, particularly his conservative career and significant votes on civil rights legislation.
