About the Author

Ken Blackburn and Jeff Lammers "[took] the concept of the paper airplane to dizzying new heights" (Boston Globe) in The World Record Paper Airplane Book. Additionally, Mr. Blackburn, an aerospace engineer at Boeing in St. Louis, Missouri, holds the world record for duration of flight by a paper craft indoors at 27.6 seconds. Mr. Lammers is a mechanical engineer with a love for aviation, and lives in West Melbourne, Florida.

Adult/High School-This brief and colorful history of flight begins with the first Chinese kites that flourished around 300 B.C.E. and ends with contemporary space shuttles. The authors explain how World War I was the catalyst to transform aircraft into weapons' carriers, and include several examples of military planes, such as the Bell X-1, the North American P-51 Mustang, and the Boeing F-15 Eagle. There is a section of hints on paper-airplane construction and advice on how to adjust the reproductions for optimum flight. More than half of the book is comprised of patterns that follow the fascinating text and illustrations; they are designed to be cut out and assembled, but they can be traced, cut out, and retraced onto heavy paper like the kind used in the book. This is a good title for bringing military and aviation history to life, and to inspire teens enrolled in beginning engineering and physics classes to create their own aviation designs.
