A group of twenty adorable crafts that use ordinary household materials emphasizes the learning of basic numbers, where ten projects use the numbers one through ten as the basis of the craft, and ten other projects that show how numbers are used in everyday life. Simultaneous.

Grade 1-4-This companion volume to Kathy Ross Crafts Letter Shapes, Kathy Ross Crafts Letter Sounds, and Kathy Ross Crafts Triangles, Rectangles, Circles, and Squares! (all Millbrook, 2002) features fun creations that involve counting and measurement and whimsical, child-friendly artwork. For visual learners, there is also an illustrated supply list for each project. The 20 activities include a four-leaf clover necklace, a five-point star magnet, a play alarm clock, calendar markers, coin-wrapper puppets, and playing-card counters. Though they look easy, a few of the activities are too complex for young children and there are no recommendations for adult supervision. Some supplies will require purchase but most are common household or craft-box items. A worthy collection of crafts that incorporates early math skills.

PreS-Gr. 1. From the Learning Is Fun series, this large-format book offers 20 craft ideas based on numbers. The first nine projects highlight the numerals from one to nine, while the rest focus on applications of numbers, such as measurement (a foot-long mother worm and her 12 little inchworms), telling time (a toy alarm clock made from a discarded compact disc), and counting (a birthday-cake pin with candles for counting years). With easy-to-find materials and step-by-step directions, these projects look promising for young children who can get a little help from parents or teachers. The bright ink-and-watercolor illustrations show each step, tool, and article needed in the crafting as well as the finished projects. Carolyn Phelan
