Grade 4-7-The story of the U.S. track-and-field athlete who impressed the world at the 2000 Sydney Olympics is disclosed in a factual and appealing format. In nine short chapters, Jones's life and athletic accomplishments are presented along with a discussion of her drive and tenacity. Numerous color photographs show both the athlete's physical power and the joy she exudes in competition. The format of the book is pleasing to the eye; however, there are some hackneyed expressions. Stewart profiles the early lives of the Williams sisters, their love of tennis, and the influence of their parents in helping them to develop into world-class tennis champions. Each of the 10 chapters includes beautiful action, color photographs of the athletes, people who influenced them, and tennis opponents. The text is well written, providing interesting insights into the personalities of these young women. Mike Fillon's Young Superstars of Tennis: The Venus and Serena Williams Story (Avisson, 1999) is more complete but lacks the appealing format of this book. In both titles, "Did You Know?" boxes and special inserts provide interesting facts about the athletes and the people in their lives.
