From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8--It is difficult to find accurate, intelligent information about countries of the world written on an appropriate level for this audience These titles will not fill the void. Sweeping generalizations and patronizing statements can be found throughout both books, e.g., "In China, where people live at very close quarters, children are taught to be cooperative." "Canada is a king-size country." Other statements are misleading, e.g., "Under a communist system, individuals are not permitted to own private property or to work for personal gain" (China). "Canadians have never paid much attention to basketball." Readers with limited knowledge of these countries could take such inaccurate statements as gospel. One of the numerous full-color photos in Canada depicts "Canadian Navajo and Hopi Indian teenagers...." This caption is highly misleading since neither tribe is native to Canada. Canada: A Portrait (published biennially by Statistics Canada) is a better choice.
