Synopsis
This relevant series highlights the endangered animals of the world, making readers aware of just how many species are at risk of extinction. Each volume begins with a general introduction followed by up-to-date information about the type of animal, where it can be found, characteristics of breeding and family life as well as social interactions, how many are left and why they are endangered or threatened. The books then address what is being done to help the animal survive and what the future holds for it.

Grade 3-5?These brief volumes give basic facts about their respective species. The texts will be useful for reports and the full-color photographs are clear and informative. Unfortunately, the writing lacks the passion for the subjects evident in titles such as Seymour Simon's Wolves (HarperCollins, 1993), June Behrens's Dolphins! (Childrens, 1989), and Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Looking at Bears (Holiday, 1994). Also, Horton provides only slight information on the causes of and possible ways to address the animals' endangered status. Bold type indicates words defined in the glossary; locator maps are garishly colored but legible; and the lists of books for further reading and organizations to contact are helpful.
