Relates the life story of the former slave and famous abolitionist

Gr 3-6--Occasionally quoting from autobiographical works, this brief but thorough biography describes Douglass's progress from his grandmother's slave cabin to Cedar Hill, the elegant Washington, D.C. home he died in 77 years later. Incidents from Douglass's early life accurately convey the horrors of slavery. Details from his later years bring the abolitionist movement and the Civil War to life. Contemporary paintings, sketches, photos, and lithographs illustrate the book in black-and-white and in color--unfortuately the captions do not cite sources for the illustrations, information that might add to their value. A list for further reading includes books and videotapes about Douglass and other African-American leaders and the antislavery movement. Sheila Keenan's Frederick Douglass (Scholastic, 1995) uses many of the same illustrations but is a much less inclusive biography for younger audiences. Patricia and Fredrick McKissack's Frederick Douglass (Children's Press, 1987; o.p.) is a longer, more extensive work suitable for slightly older readers. He Fought for Freedom ably fills a niche between these two books and will be useful and informative for a wide audience.
