Each book opens with a series of quotes by both contemporary residents and people from the past -- giving voice to the state's concerns, admiration for the people, love of the land, nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future.

Gr 4-7-These series entries are appealing, easy to use, and informative. They are simpler in scope than the popular "America the Beautiful" series (Children's), though could be used to complement those titles. Predictability is the hallmark of many series books, and these are no exception. Each volume has six chapters: "Geography," "History," "Government and Economy," "People," "Achievements," and "Landmarks." The easy-to-read texts are peppered with quotes to enliven the facts. There are lots of maps, charts, and full-color photographs, with sidebars or illustrations on every double-page spread. Music is provided for the state songs and the presentations include a popular recipe or two, a section on famous personalities from each state, and a "Calendar of Celebrations." These lively and colorful books offer far more interesting fare than standard encyclopedia articles.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA
