Gr 4-8-Stein relates the details of everyday life in two regions of the American frontier, describing settlement patterns and the ways the settlers adapted to and left a lasting impression on the regions' cultures. He includes information about farming and ranching, home life, childhood, religion, and social life in the isolated settlements. His coverage is objective and well balanced, especially the discussions of religious practices and the status of women, slaves, and indigenous peoples. The texts are supplemented with illustrations, period art, and photographs of artifacts and reenactments. These books are interesting and attractive, but they join a field crowded with recent titles about life in previous eras. They lack the detailed drawings and background material found in Scott Steedman's A Frontier Fort on the Oregon Trail (Peter Bedrick, 1994). Paul Erickson's Daily Life on a Southern Plantation (Lodestar, 1998) and Raymond Bial's The Strength of These Arms (Houghton, 1997) feature outstanding descriptive passages and visual images.
