Reviews

Reviewed with Lewis K. Parker's Egypt.

Gr. 3-6. Part of the Discovering Cultures series, each of these two lively volumes combines a quick historical overview with facts about ethnicity, geography, politics, religion, the arts, holidays, and more. Cuba sometimes slips into generic, upbeat commentary ("Cuban people are fun-loving by nature"), but Gordon includes lots of interesting specifics that convey a strong sense of daily life--difficulties and pleasures--at home, at school, and at work. Egypt focuses on ancient history, but there's also a clear sense of contemporary life, including lively photos and descriptions of city life, various religious celebrations (Islamic and Coptic), and kids surfing the Internet. The series design is spacious, with clear type; lots of big, full-color photos; a map; a glossary; and a bibliography that includes Web sites and a video. Good introductory titles for reports and personal interest. Hazel Rochman
