Synopsis

Celebrate the richness and diversity of the United States of America in this exciting series. Readers can explore the unique character of each state -- its land and waterways, its history, its government and economy, its festivals, cultural diversity, landmarks and exciting stories of success. Readers will also hear the voices of men and women alive today. They will see the beauties and hidden treasures of each state and hear the social issues and concerns faced by the residents.

Each book opens with a series of quotes by both contemporary residents and people from the past -- giving voice to the state's concerns, admiration for the people, love of the land, nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future.

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7--Although most of the information here can be found in other titles, these volumes are written in a spirited manner. Quotations from famous, infamous, and unknown citizens are sprinkled throughout the texts, adding to the lively style. The authors write with an appreciation of their states' history, characteristics, and inhabitants. The information is up-to-date; Oregon includes discussions of the 1996 flood and the arrival of Keiko, the killer whale of Free Willy fame. Each book is divided into sections on geography, history, government and economy, people, achievements, and landmarks. The full-color photographs, the large detailed representations of the states' flags and seals, and the inclusion of the words and music for each state's song are big selling points. A typical recipe is also highlighted. The "Find Out More" sections list not only books, but also videos, CD-ROMs, and web sites. Unfortunately, there are a few flaws. The maps are not keyed. The Oregon Trail is discussed, but not shown. Although Anne Rice is quoted several times in Louisiana, she is not listed among the "State Stars." In Oregon, a typographical error has Dick Fosbury competing in the summer Olympics at age one. However, these criticisms are minor. There are so many good points to these titles that they will enhance any collection.
