PreSchool-Grade 2AAn interesting first look at the different ways animals, especially nocturnal ones, spend their days. The text uses brief rhyming couplets to introduce contrasting activities, one on each page, while the illustrations detail the action (or inaction). For example, "Light pours/Fox snores," "Monarch glides/Luna hides," and "Turtle snaps/Spider naps." For the most part, the contrasts work well. The realistic watercolor-and-pencil drawings show the wildlife in natural habitats and adequately extend the brief text, though there is a problem with the first two spreads. On the first, the text reads, "Sun peeps," but the illustration shows the rays flooding both pages and even reaching into a skunk's sleeping place; on the second, the light is said to "pour," and this picture is not much different from the first. It's a bit confusing.
