About the Author
RUTH LERCHER BORNSTEIN is the author-illustrator of twelve picture books and the illustrator of several others. This is her first novel. She lives in Santa Monica, California.

Gr. 5-7. This is a story of Depression hardship, told from the viewpoint of a child in search of home. Dad left two years ago after losing yet another job, and Charlotte ("Charley"), 11, has moved with her stressed-out mom from their city tenement to a rough house near the railway track in Valley Junction, Missouri. Mom works seven days a week in the clanging, stinking cannery, and she wants better for Charley. She's furious when Charley finds refuge with Beryl, the local "crazy" old lady, who loves Charley and teaches her to grow a garden and find herself as an artist. The characters are drawn with aching truth. Charley is angered by Mom's magazine images of the American dream, but she also yearns for a mom and dad together. Charley's plain, unsentimental narrative reveals the slum kid's discovery of the beauty of nature and, finally, her acceptance of the loving touch of Mom's work-rough hands. Hazel Rochman
