Frederick is the brave one. Ishbu is the hungry one. The rat brothers live in a cage in Miss Dove's classroom, where they can learn and eat to their hearts content. Then the fateful day arrives when class bully Millicent Mallory teaches them the meaning of the word . . . extermination! No sooner have the two rats fled the school than they embark on the wildest adventure of their lives. They follow the trail of the Burmese Bandicoot, a beautiful and mysterious statue, from the underworld lair of the Big Cheese to a tropical island that may not be the paradise it seems. The brothers trip around the globe by paw, air, and sea reveals a whole new world and reminds them what they value most.

About the Author:
JUDY COX lives with her husband and son in Ontario, Oregon. Her first novel, The Mystery of the Burmese Bandicoot, brings the wit and wisdom of her popular chapter books and picture books to middle-grade readers and draws on her own experiences as a teacher. Her picture book, "Don't Be Silly, Mrs. Millie!", was named one of the top ten children's books of the year by Time magazine in 2005. She is currently working on the next book about Frederick and Ishbu.
Review:
Giving this spry caper dimension are snippets of science, history and fiction Frederick has gleaned at school and the strong fraternal bond between the brothers, despite their differences. The action-packed story should readily hold readers' attention. --Publishers Weekly, December 17, 2007

The short, action-packed chapters, engaging illustrations, and author's conversational style will attract many readers. This book would serve as an entertaining read-aloud. --VOYA, December 2007

Fast-paced and suspenseful, this is solid entertainment for the middle-grade reader. --Kirkus Reviews, August 15, 2007
