Synopsis
Sarah Simpson is her dad’s "Idea Girl," but right now she doesn’t have any good ideas. Nothing that will make people think she is someone special. Then she remembers something unusual going on outside her kitchen window. Two pigeons keep appearing on the ledge and pecking at the window. Sarah begins to think of them as her pigeons and names them Coo and Cuckoo. She is horrified, however, when they start to build their nest outside the neighbors’ apartment next door. How could they be so disloyal? Finally Sarah gets a big idea—one that helps her get over this catastrophe!

About the Author
Author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has written more than 120 books that are beloved by children. Her novel Shiloh won the Newbery Award and was voted by children as their favorite book in more than 20 states. It was followed by Shiloh Season and Saving Shiloh. She is also the author of The Great Chicken Debacle. Ms. Naylor lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
Illustrator Marcy Ramsey has illustrated numerous children’s picture and chapter books, including In Our Backyard Garden by Eileen Spinelli and I Was Born to Be a Sister by Akaela S. Michels-Gualtieri. She lives in Maryland.

Grade 2-4–Sarah Simpson, who made her debut in Anyone Can Eat Squid! (Marshall Cavendish, 2005), is out of great ideas, despite her nickname idea girl. After observing two pigeons outside her apartment window, she decides that she is going to keep them as pets. However, when they begin spending more time on a balcony next door and start to nest, Sarah becomes jealous of the girl and boy who live there. Soon after, she and her brother befriend the children, and her concern shifts to other pigeons that are intent on taking over the nest of the first two birds. After an egg is lost, the girl comes up with a solution that saves another egg and provides a home for the aggressive creatures. Sarah is a likable character who lives in a diverse neighborhood. Both setting and plot ring true, but the chapter Making Faces, in which Sarah and her friends discover that skin colors are neither pure white nor pure black is a bit didactic.
