This book provides a clear and engaging description of group dynamic processes. Vignettes, case examples, and activities provide an experiential flavor to the book that will deepen the reader’s understanding of key concepts. Activities are also useful experiential teaching and learning tools for studying group dynamics and allow participants to engage in the group dynamic process itself. Another attractive feature of the book is a series of reflections by an individual who participated in an intensive two-weekend group experience. She shares her thoughts on the group’s progression through various stages of change and reflects upon its impact on her personal growth. Group Dynamics: Basics and Pragmatics for Practitioners will serve as an important text for students and professors and as a valuable guide for those who facilitate groups in a variety of clinical, counseling, educational, research, and organizational settings.

This book is a valuable resource for professionals and students who facilitate groups and participate in groups. A combination of conceptual frameworks, case examples, and experiential activities provide a foundation for learning and applying group-dynamic concepts and intervention strategies. The book also shares evaluation and assessment approaches to guide the measurement of group processes and impacts. —Roger Weissberg, Ph.D, professor of psychology and CEO of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), University of Illinois at Chicago
I have never seen a better collection of practical tools for building understanding of group processes and running groups effectively. I will use this book for my work in developing school-based teams. I finally have a set of tools to help students and professionals become effective group leaders and team members. Norris Haynes’ approaches to conflict and power accelerate the learning curve dramatically. The I AM group process— Interest, Achievement, Motivation—is laid out more clearly than I have ever seen it and . . . will allow you to train students and professionals with remarkable effectiveness. —Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., professor of psychology, internship coordinator, director of clinical training at Rutgers University
