Synopsis

Examining conceptual and definitional issues surrounding notions of crime and deviance, this noteworthy text illustrates the diversity of the phenomenon of crime, both historically and currently, and reveals how crime is both ubiquitous and continually subject to political contestation. The Problem of Crime provides an interdisciplinary perspective and examines key topics, including the construction and deconstruction of crime, the changing conceptions of crime, the family as a site of crime, and the politics of crime. The contributors engage students by discussing the popular representations of crime, using the detective novel as an example, and challenge them to consider the broad spectrum of crime, including crimes of the powerful, hidden, and respectable. The Problem of Crime proves to be an absorbing text for students of criminology, criminal justice, and sociology.
