Reviews

It's a surprising amalgamation of ingenuous decorating and home fix-ups. Thanks to the creative eye of Londoner Cohen (with seven other books to her credit), and to Reader's Digest's insistence on excellent visual and narrative instructions, a novice designer isn't required to be a do-it-yourselfer guru. First of all, there's a thorough exploration of materials and techniques, from types of paint to the right solutions; one indication of the author's and publisher's attention to detail is a sidebar dedicated to quantities needed: buy paint for two coats; a five percent overage on tiles; and enough for one wallpaper's pattern repeat. On to the problems, like damaged walls, worn and stained carpet, flat doors, budget window treatments, and plain fireplaces. Each is allotted at least two solutions along with top-quality color photographs; at-a-glance summaries of time, finish, problem, and solution; materials needed; and "getting it right" tips to help guarantee a good-looking finish.
