As our oldest domesticated animal, dogs retain an eminent spot in human's lives and hearts. New dog owners are created every day as neophytes bring home their first dog, and the need for introductory books remains strong. Davis has created a nice primer for those wanting a dog book to read both before and after acquiring a canine. The first section on choosing a dog sets up the structure of the rest of the book. Each chapter begins with a checklist of what is covered in the text. Short, punchy paragraphs deliver the essential information, with numerous boxed sections ("Canine Facts," "Did You Know?" and "Frequently Asked Questions") going into more depth on specific subjects. Tables provide breakdowns on various choices an owner can make, with pro and con details, characteristics, examples, or requirements given for each choice. Other sections discuss canine behavior, basic care, training, and health care. One strength of the book is the nonemphasis on purebred dogs, and the beautiful, well-chosen photos depict crossbreeds as often as recognizable breeds. Nancy Bent
