Reviews

Any stitcher worth his or her yarn will insist that there is no such thing as too many patterns. And with the renaissance of crochet, the resurrection of old-fashioned, even retro designs continues--all, of course, proffered with a contemporary twist. The Reader's Digest gang--and authors Mackin (So Simple Knits, 2005) and Whiting (Learn to Crochet, 2005)--team up to create more than 30 projects from which to choose, including sweaters, accessories, kid stuff, and home accessories. Here, the emphasis is on quick, meaning a one- to two-weekend project. Although none of the patterns indicate time to complete, all feature skill level, materials, charts (when needed), directions, and color photographs. What's more, a few sport a loving-hands-at-home look; a ruffled boa as well as asymmetrical jacket, among others, symbolize a professional twentieth-century crochet. Barbara Jacobs
