Synopsis
A classic story first published in 1961, The Three Funny Friends tells the tale of a little girl who moves to a new town and, in her loneliness, befriends a trio of pals who conspire to do all sorts of things--both good and naughty--with her. The mischief continues, to the frustration of the little girl's weary mother, until the girl meets a flesh-and-blood child who lives next door. As they play and pursue adventures, those three funny friends are suddenly nowhere to be seen. It's a sweet, affecting story, for ages 48, about finding one's place in a new home, and the importance of companionship.

About the Author
Charlotte Zolotow has written more than seventy-five books for children. Her classic books include The Storm Book, a 1953 Caldecott Honor, Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present, a 1963 Caldecott Honor, My Grandson Lew, winner of the 1974 Christopher Medal, and the highly acclaimed William's Doll. Ms. Zolotow lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

PreSchool-Grade 2-In this newly illustrated version of a story originally published in 1961, a nameless little girl moves to a new town and takes comfort in her three imaginary friends. Guy-Guy, a penguin, is the one behind all the naughty things she seems to do. Bickerina, a rabbit, does wonderful things that no one can see, like finishing chores and buying castles for the family. Mr. Dobie, a pig, does all the things the little girl doesn't want to do; he takes her bath, eats her supper for her, and even sleeps for her when she doesn't feel like going to bed. But when she meets Tony, the boy next door, the "three funny friends" gradually retreat into the background as she develops a real-life friendship. Bronson's whimsical illustrations feature bright pastels and bold shapes, and the placement of the imaginary animals on each page reflects the mood of the story. The last page shows the child sleeping peacefully in her bed, while the three imaginary animals dance under the moon in the distance, at the edge of her consciousness.
