Eleanor Berman visited numerous B & Bs scattered about Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, and the ones she's lovingly written about and illustrated are her 150 favorites. While they all share quality in common, there are a variety of B & B flavors and styles to choose from. The inns are organized by state, but Berman also indexes them by categories, so you can seek B & Bs that serve afternoon tea and those that serve dinner, B & Bs with outdoor hot tubs or ones with mountain views, look for a family atmosphere, or opt for romance. Just breezing through Berman's beautifully illustrated book is inspirational. There's Swan House in Camden, Maine--an intimate 1879 Victorian at the foot of Mount Battie, $85 to $125 a night, with five rooms, antique furnishings, a cozy library with a needlepoint Monopoly game under glass, and breakfasts like hot blueberry pancakes with bacon, plus juice, home-baked muffins, fresh fruit, and granola served on the glass-enclosed sun porch. Or try Maple Hill Farm in New Hampshire for an old-fashioned inn experience at $55 to $85 a night. Homey and warm with lots of quilts and calico curtains (and a choice of breakfasts that ranges from baked apple and toast for light eaters to a farm meal of biscuits, country bacon, eggs, and hash browns), the house was built in 1824, has four porches, and kids are welcome.
