Gold! Jack London is twenty-one when the news spreads around the world: A ship loaded with gold has arrived in San Francisco a ton of pure gold, $700,000 in nuggets collected on the banks of the Klondike in the Great Canadian North.
London has already done every kind of casual labor available, including pirating in San Francisco Bay. So he decides to try his luck. On July 25, 1897, he boards a ship bound for Alaska.
More than 250,000 men will embark on this adventure, though only 50,000 will reach their destination, and very few will find gold. After one harsh winter in the Grand North and a bad case of scurvy, London returns to San Francisco with just $4.50 but with a wealth of stories to tell. He publishes his first magazine piece within six months, and in 1899 he publishes his first book, The Son of the Wolf, a collection of eight Klondike tales. The book’s instant success marks the beginning of a fortune made in the Klondike without pick or pan.
Excerpts from London’s writings are our traveling companions on this colorfully illustrated journey to the Klondike. Discover the trappers, Indians, dog team drivers, missionaries, and prospectors that so inspired this revered American writer and continue to populate the Grand North.
