9780762744770: Bud Ballew: Legendary Oklahoma Lawman

Synopsis

The Dust Bowl era of Oklahoma was still very much the Wild West, and Bud Ballew was its most controversial and effective deputy sheriff. He spent a decade chasing criminals, making daily appearances in newspapers, and proving his determination and finesse with a revolver. Bud Ballew participated in more gun battles than Wyatt Earp and killed more men than Billy the Kid. Bud Ballew’s story comes to life in a riveting biography set in the early days of gritty Oklahoma (celebrating its state centennial this year), with never-before-published black-and-white photos as well as archival news stories.

From the Back Cover

Lawmen with “sand in their craws” were needed in the Old West.
Such a man was Bud Ballew.

Deputy-Sheriff David “Bud” Ballew's name was rarely missing from the issues of the local Daily Ardmorette and Ardmore Statesman newspapers from 1910 to 1920. Many outlaws tempted fate and lost their lives against the quick-handed gunslinger, and for this reason Ballew soon received international attention for his reputation with a revolver.
Official documents and personal mementos from Ballew's descendants, as well as never-before-published photographs, shed light on this unsung hero. Bud Ballew met his demise in a deadly shoot-out in Wichita Falls, Texas, on May 5, 1922, but his legend lives on in these action-packed pages.
