A very hungry monster finally finds something good to eat when he meets a girl with a banana

Pres-Grade 2. This book has a simple story line that will appeal to preschoolers. A monster comes to Earth via a rocket and searches for food. Root builds in an element of suspense when, after tasting a dandelion, a rock, and a tree, the hungry monster spots a little girl and considers eating her. Comic relief is quickly provided when the child thrusts a banana in the alien's face and it consumes the fruit, peel and all. The pen-and-ink and watercolor artwork is bright and colorful but not exceptional. The monster, a wacky looking creature complete with two-toned scales and wings, is expressive and playful rather than frightening. It is the focus throughout and often the only thing on the page aside from the text. The girl is nondescript. When background scenes are provided, they are minimal in detail allowing the eye to stay with the central action. The Hungry Monster is not a primary pick but is an additional selection for story times and beginning readers.?Dawn Ibey, Vancouver Public Library, Canada

When a rocket descends to Earth, out steps a very hungry monster in search of something fit to eat. The monster tries a daisy, a rock, and a tree, each one resulting in a giant ``YUCK!'' A small girl in the ravenous monster's path resourcefully appeases it with a banana, peel and all. The pudgy dragon-of-a-monster with zig-zag ears, blue arms, and brightly colored scales is made funnier and friendlier by its blue Mary Janes and a fork-and-spoon necklace. Bold letters emphasize the monster's alternating refrains of ``YUM!'' and ``YUCK!'' that are certain to be mimicked by young children. Root (Mrs. Potter's Pig, 1996, etc.) uses very few words to tell this silly story that includes a dash of suspense; it's a just-right read-aloud for board-book graduates.
