Kindergarten-Grade 4-As a read-aloud, The Wind in the Willows has daunted many well-intentioned adults. This companion volume to The River Bank (Candlewick, 1996) will serve those same readers well. Moore's editing of Grahame's text preserves the fun, the action, and the characters while leaving much of the description to the charming, wonderfully textured pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations. Children will be captivated by the delicately detailed, full-page drawings and remain interested in Toad's exuberant, reckless escapades. Perhaps once they've been exposed to this version, they'll want to try the unexpurgated original. If not, they will still have experienced the heart of the matter.
