A young boy describes all the things he likes and does not like about his feisty new puppy

PreSchool-Grade 1-Children will be charmed by the antics of a lovable pup as his young owner describes its sometimes good, sometimes bad behavior. "The good thing is, you get to walk him every day. The bad thing is, he wants to go his own way." When the boy receives a big wet kiss at the story's end, it is unlikely anyone will disagree with his assessment that "The best thing is, a puppy is a friend." The canine's exuberance is brought to life in the actions the child relates and through the lively watercolor-and-ink illustrations that roll and bounce across each page with puppylike enthusiasm. The simple vocabulary and bold-faced print against a crisp white background may also make this story inviting for beginning readers.

With a cuddly puppy doing mischief, and boys and dogs having lots of fun, this extremely appealing book hits all the right buttons. A little boy mulls over what he likes best and least about his puppy: "The good thing is . . . he's warm and wiggly," says the child, who stands with the pup stuffed inside his shirt. "The bad thing is, he won't keep still." Hindley's text realistically recognizes both the child's impatience and his loving bond with his pet, with Casey's pictures providing a comic overlay. Although the depiction of the puppy is more natural than that of the little boy, Casey's prudently detailed artwork catches the story's carefree feel perfectly. Stephanie Zvirin
