PreS-This text is a 1954 song, loose and lilting with lots of repetition within each stanza as well as a chorus that reoccurs four times, but it's stilted when read rather than sung. The dolly gets dressed, sings, eats, plays, and then she goes to sleep-"And she looks like this." Unfortunately, there is no character development within the art to support this linear progression. Rather, the vividly patterned collage illustrations don't always focus on "my dolly"; other toys or animals are often in the forefront. While these dolls flop around at random and appear sporadically among the pages, a more traditionally identifiable "doll" with an inverted teacup on her head is seen on almost every spread. Readers will try to associate this character with the text and yet the two don't always mesh. The other toys parade across the blank background with equal aplomb. Then, once a vague sense of acceptance of this nonconformity is established, the typeface is replaced by a child's scrawl while what appears to be a child's art appears with photographs of the artist's own childhood dolls. Literal-minded kids will find this book unsettling.
