Grade 4-8-Dark and eerie illustrations set the mood for a chilling look into the paranormal. This delightful entertainment begins with an abridged version of Algernon Blackwood's taut suspense story "The Empty House." The tone changes abruptly in the second section entitled "How to Catch a Ghost," which is presented as a scrapbook of real cases pursued by ghost hunter "Dee Bunker." From this point on, the subject is treated in a less-than-serious manner. Sightings of different types of ghosts from around the world and throughout history are each summed up in a paragraph or two. A list of items to include in an amateur ghost-hunter's kit plus a chart of typical haunting sights and sounds and their mundane explanations lead into a sheaf of notes from some of Dee's favorite investigations. Additional sections include a "Souvenir Guide" to the National Museum of Phony Ghosts and a rated guide to black-and-white and color films with ghostly subjects. The final "Ready Reference" section is filled with tidbits such as a "Haunted History" time line, ghost lore from around the world, and a short list of Web sites. Evidentiary photographs, illustrations, and movie stills are surrounded by amusing cartoons and faux realia, creating a playful atmosphere throughout the work. While Daniel Cohen's compilations offer straightforward accounts of the paranormal, Maynard's work, despite the chilling cover illustration, offers a reassuring romp for ghostbusters to enjoy.
