Grade 5 Up-Using a newspaper format to present history and facts about Viking and Stone Age life is an ingenious and entertaining vehicle to grab readers' attention and inform them. Society pages, religious news, real estate, etc., illustrate many aspects of ancient life in clever, humorous ways. "A Cave of My Own" provides tips on how to convert a cave into a comfortable living space while "Bjorn's Battle Tips" tells about life as a Viking soldier. Even the classified ads are fun and frequently corny. Colorful pages with informative articles, advertising, and heavy use of illustrations result in a wonderful way to introduce readers to Viking and prehistoric life, as well as to interest students in journalism. The texts are easy to understand, light, and breezy. These two titles should spark the imaginations of readers and motivate them to explore the topics in meatier books.

Thanks to the form of a lively newspaper, children can pick and choose the subjects that most intrigue them about our Neanderthal ancestors, various ice ages, the taming of wolves and more. Under such alluring headlines as Hunting Hotshots, Ten Uses for a Mammoth, and New-Fangled Farming, we learn how early man survived and slowly altered the environment. There are even eye-catching advertisements: Fabulous Footwear; Healer Helper Needed; Baskets Galore. A paleontologist consultant, Alison Roberts, of England's Ashmolean Museum has overseen the marshalling of accurate information. Among other volumes in the same series (each on 32 oversized pages) are The Aztec News, The Egyptian News and The Viking News. Here is an instance in which an ingenious format makes the learning of facts exciting. Parents' Choice Silver Honor. (Selma G. Lanes, Parents' Choice, 1998) -- From Parents' Choice®
