PreS-K. These very simple books in the Brand New Readers series make strong connections between art and text to help children read on their own. There are four scenarios in each book, each one preceded by a summary in simple words that can be read aloud to a child, who can then go back to read alone. The main text, in large type and with no more than eight words on a page, comprises mostly one-syllable words; the pictures, cartoonlike and in flat, bright colors, show the action clearly. Mouse is a bit more successful as the action is simpler, with Mouse jumping in puddles and going fishing; Bravo requires that kids look a little closer at the pictures, especially the final setup, in which a naughty rabbit gets chased by Kazam, the magician's pack of magical cards.
