McEwen's colorful, cartoonlike illustrations are a perfect complement for Ahlberg's understated, comic style, and there are several running gags, including a doormat with an ever-changing message, that will keep young readers engaged. The format (short chapters, large print, and easy-reader-style text placement) will appeal to beginning readers, and the sophisticated plot will intrigue slightly older ones.
