From School Library Journal

ea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. CIP. Crown. Jan. 1986. PSm $4.95. PreS No glitz. No off-the-wall animals even you have not heard of. No bizarre opposites and no outrageous color combinations. This series presents four basic learning concepts clearly and simply. In . . .ABC , whimsical full-page color illustrations depict a child interacting with animals or objects, each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. Both capital and lower-case letters are given. In . . .Colors, a hat on the left-hand page shows the color and above it in large letters is the color word itself. On the right is a full-page illustration of a child involved in an activity, showing a range of objects in that color for children to identify. The final spread lists and depicts all of the colors. Some children may have difficulty identifying the subtle shadings of blues versus greens. In . . .123 , individual children climb a huge, overgrown tree until there are ten children perched in the leaves and branches. A tiger frightens them out of the tree, and all that remains is one tiger. Double-page illustrations capture the delight and fun of the scampering children, each of whom is clearly drawn for easy counting. Both the numeral and number word are given in large type. . . .Opposites is presented with the same endearing, although more gently humorous, illustrations. Each book is done with skill, charm and clarity, and each is a delightfully tailored learning tool. Louise M. Zuckerman, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
