For a kid who balks at bedtime, switching roles is great fun — for a while — in a delightfully droll tale that will resonate with readers big and small.
Arathusela does not like to go to bed. But one night she has an idea. "Why don’t you let me put YOU to sleep for a change?" she says. "Fine," says her father. "Marvelous," says her mother. But after her parents beg to stay up for just a few more minutes, argue about the book they will hear, and ask for just one more good-night kiss, Arathusela gets the feeling that this job might not be as easy as she thinks. Joan Levine’s witty, spot-on story and Tony Auth’s humorous illustrations make for an utterly spirited story sure to be a favorite at bedtime — and any time.

Joan Levine, a noted psychologist, has written several books for children. This is her first with Candlewick Press. She lives in New York City.
Tony Auth has won the Pulitzer Prize for his irreverent political cartoons. His work has appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer since 1971. He is the illustrator of several books for children, including MY CURIOUS UNCLE DUDLEY by Barry Yourgrau and A PROMISE IS A PROMISE by Florence Parry Heide.
It’s usually Arathusela who makes “a terrible fuss about going to bed,” but the tables are turned when Arathusela puts her parents to bed. Using dialogue that mimics every child who has ever complained about bedtime, Mom and Dad stall and stall, trying their daughter’s patience to the max (“I’VE HAD IT. I’M ON THE BRINK”): they want more TV time, argue about choosing a book, plead for soda, and, once tucked in with hugs and kisses, have the nerve to remind Arathusela that she forgot to sing them a song. But Arathusela is lonesome when she’s finally by herself and heads back to her parents’ room. What happens next proves she’s may, indeed, still be the boss. Auth’s fluidly rendered line-and-watercolor cartoon characters (Arathusela’s lanky parents contrast nicely with their daughter’s rounded little self), reflect a wide range of emotion—from surprise to frustration to glee. With a clever “once-upon-a-time opener” setting the stage, this bedtime story will serve as a charmingly ironic change of pace. Pair it with Peggy Rathmann’s 10 Minutes Till Bedtime (1998). Grades K-3. --Patricia Austin
