K-Gr 2–Thomas explores aspects of the payoffs of perseverance and conquering fears. Using everyday examples, such as approaching a giraffe at the zoo, watching firefighters at work, falling off a skateboard (in both books), or attempting gymnastics, the author's encouraging tone embraces adversity and nudges youngsters toward personal strength. Each title also includes a couple of “What About You?” sidebars, personalizing the topics with questions for dialogue. Harker's vivid and jovial pages depict characters of diverse ethnicities whose troubled expressions change into pride in accomplishment. The afterword gives tips to adults on ways to use the book and provides a short list of additional resources as well as topic-appropriate picture books for children. The titles' positive attitude and attractive illustrations should provide a starting point of discussion for children needing encouragement and support.–Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA.
