Cat and Bat, Hare and Bear, Frog and Hog, Duck and Goose, and Mouse and Moose are having fun playing hide and seek! Kids can play along with them by closing their eyes, counting to ten, and turning each page to a new and funny illustration. First, kids must find the Cat who is hiding in a field. His colors blend in with the many other details in this vividly colored illustration, so toddlers will have to look very carefully. Once they?ve found Cat, they can turn to the next page and seek out another animal friend in hiding. Finally, at the story?s end, all the animals have been found and have returned home to rest. All except one?the little Mouse! Where has Mouse gone? Boys and girls will be delighted by the surprising answer to this question.

John Rowe, was born in Surrey, England, and received his training at the Epsom School of Art and Design. He held a wide variety of jobs before first publishing his illustrations in 1990 in a children?s book based on one of Rudyard Kipling?s Just So Stories. Since then, he has written and illustrated several children?s books and has won numerous international awards for his work. Amazing Animal Hide and Seek is his first book for Barron?s.
PreSchool-Grade 1-Ten animals of various shapes and sizes invite children to play hide-and-seek. Readers are told to shut their eyes and count to 10 while the creatures disperse. The animals get increasingly harder to find as the rhymes progress and in the end, only one is still at large. "Who is hiding in the house?/He squeaks and twitches,/and scurries and hurries./He's so tiny, will you ever find him?" A mouse is found inside the grandfather clock under the book's only flap. While the premise is charming, the execution is muddled. The cartoon illustrations attempt a wacky sensibility but come across as confusing instead. The large-nosed cat looks more like a dog and the bat's face is very similar to that of the mouse. These factors will frustrate young children who enjoy successfully guessing who's who. The text, which gives readers clues throughout, is written in inconsistent verse. For more satisfying hide-and-seek titles, stick with Jose Aruego's We Hide, You Seek (Greenwillow, 1979) or Jane Simmons's Daisy's Hide-and-Seek (Little, Brown, 2001).
