This volume from the Find Out About series looks different from the other "country books" on the shelf. Cookbook-style dividers are tabbed to mark the chapters, and the illustrations are quiet drawings instead of brightly colored photos. Those differences, combined with the appealing cover, give the book great eye-appeal. The text is organized effectively, with a tourist-oriented introduction followed by sections on everyday life in China today, Chinese history, and a beginner's guide to phrases in Mandarin Chinese. Although some of the information is presented in paragraph form, much of it appears in small, individual nuggets or lists of fast facts without a great deal of context. The attractive artwork, line drawings washed with gentle colors, elevates this introduction to China, which will be particularly useful for children traveling there or who are enrolled in Mandarin language programs at school.
