USS Yorktown (CV-5) was the US Navy's first battle-worthy, purpose-built aircraft carrier. Her crew, already accustomed to wartime conditions by maintaining Neutrality Patrols during 1941 in the Atlantic, quickly adapted to the Pacific Theater, having been dispatched there immediately after Pearl Harbor. First at Coral Sea, then at Midway, Yorktown's flyers blunted the sword of Japanese aggression. The men flying from her decks were instrumental in turning the tide of WWII in the Pacific. This volume explores Yorktown's construction, prewar and wartime activities through carefully researched photos, many of which have never before been published, which are reproduced in remarkable clarity. This clarity, and the large size of many of the photos, coupled with descriptive and informative captions, puts the reader on the deck of this historic warship throughout her history.

AUTHOR: David Doyle's earliest published works appeared in periodicals aimed at the historic military vehicle restoration hobby. This was a natural outlet for the collector, whose collection includes ten Vietnam-era vehicles. By 1999, this included regular features in leading hobby publications, appearing regularly in US, English, and Polish magazines. Since 2003, over 100 of his books have been published. While some concern aircraft and warships, volumes on military vehicles, meticulously researched by David and his wife Denise, remain the genre for which he is most recognised. This recognition peaked in 2015, when he was presented the coveted Bart Vanderveen Award by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association, given in recognition of, "the individual who has contributed the most to the historic preservation of military vehicles worldwide." 180 b/w photos Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
