Review
It is odd that some of this century's most recognizable art and some of its least understood pieces both hail from the artistic movement known as pop art. (Who has not been to a museum with an Andy Warhol on display and overheard the comment, "Why is that considered art?") Regardless of your level of enthusiasm (or lack thereof) for the movements collectively known as pop, you'll surely find something to appreciate in Richard Leslie's Pop Art: A New Generation of Style. Unlike many art books, which start with an introductory essay and then leave you to wade unguided through its various color plates, Pop Art presents a continuous thread of text and images. Leslie begins with the movements preceding and following pop. His commentary encompasses many disparate and distinctive works, all of which fall under the moniker of pop, elucidating both their common themes as well as their individual values. Such images include both the familiar (Lichtenstein, Warhol) and the less well known (Artschwager, Katz), making Pop Art relevant for art students of all levels.
