Alphabetical entries provide detailed accounts of the lives and careers of individuals, teams, organizations, institutions, and specific sports, including traditional games of skill. Signed essays provide background and historical context for social issues such as racism, adaptation, and assimilation and also address contemporary controversies, such as mascots and gambling. Some topics cover familiar ground. There are lengthy articles on Jim Thorpe, Will Rogers, and Tiger Woods (also found in the African American volume). However, lesser known figures, such as Fred Sasakamoose, the first full-blooded Indian to play in the National Hockey League, are also included. Women are well represented.
