During his short life (1833-1864), James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart was hailed not only for his combat skills and horsemanship, but also for his charismatic leadership: soldiers under his command would literally follow their general anywhere, even while enduring inhuman hardships. Contemporary reports agree that the man's courage was outstanding, even in a conflict noted for daring military heroes. Stuart was also noted for his colorful taste in uniforms; typically he arrayed himself in fine leather riding boots, white gloves, and a jaunty, plumed hat.
