Grade 7 Up-Students who take food and food safety for granted are in for a shock when they navigate the murky world of microbes, toxins, and chemicals that make millions of Americans sick every year. The eight chapters include the history of foodborne diseases, the various microbes involved and how they are toxic to our bodies, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, the social costs of food poisoning, and methods of prevention on both a personal and societal level. The bright, conversational style is established by introducing Brianne Kiner, age nine, whose bout with E. coli contracted at a Jack in the Box restaurant several years ago was the first in a series of highly publicized food-poisoning scourges. Each succeeding chapter opens with an anecdote that personalizes and makes concrete the more complex explanation that follows. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams break up the text, but add little to the content. Appendixes include a question-and-answer section; a list of contact organizations; extensive chapter notes; recommended books, articles, videos, and Web sites; and a helpful index. This excellent book will fill a niche on library shelves.
