Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, the child of freed slaves. Orphaned at seven, she and her sister supported themselves by taking in laundry and working in cotton fields. She married young (at 14) and was left a widow with a small child at 19. Her gift was her ability to recognize the particular hair-care problems of African American women, and she had the determination to develop and market new products to address these needs. Her insights would make her the first African American woman to become a millionaire. It's a great story, and Yannuzzi tells it straightforwardly. The lives of some of Walker's noteworthy contemporaries, such as Booker T. Washington and Mary McLeod Bethune, are touched on as Yannuzzi details the entrepreneur's many community contributions.
