Spangenburg and Moser investigate some of the most deplorable examples of systematic mass killings employing racial, religious, or ethnic justifications. A chapter each is devoted to the Holocaust, Armenian genocide, Cambodian killing fields, the Rwanda massacre, and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Kosovo. Details of the political climate and events leading up to the murders are rather complicated and may require readers to seek out further information. Recent United Nations declarations about human rights and the establishment of an International Criminal Court to hear "crimes against humanity" are included along with a chapter advising individuals of what they can do to prevent future atrocities. Occasional black-and-white photographs depict the misery and suffering of wholesale destruction.
