Written clearly and including chapter notes and a resource list for related Web sites, the book will be useful for reports or debates. A few small photos are scattered throughout. A solid addition to any public or school library collection.-Victoria Kidd, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA CURRIE, Stephen. Pirates. 108p. (World History Series). maps. photos. reprods. bibliog. further reading. index. notes. CIP. Lucent. 2001. PLB $19.96. ISBN 1-56006-807-8. LC 00-010394. Grade 6-10-This book is packed with references to primary- and secondary-source materials that accurately portray the buccaneer throughout history. While the introduction touches upon pirates during ancient and Roman times and the Middle Ages, and there is a brief sidebar about modern-day pirates, the book is largely focused on the Golden Age of Piracy during the 17th and early 18th centuries. Discussions center on what brought about this period, the hierarchy on a ship, living conditions on board, victims, and policing the seas. In the concluding chapter, Currie explores the impact that these corsairs had on history and popular culture, and some of the myths associated with these fascinating freebooters. The book includes a limited number of black-and-white reproductions and photographs. This title will attract researchers and avid pirate fans. Students looking for a less scholarly source may prefer Valerie Garwood's The World of the Pirate (Peter Bedrick, 1997).
